It’s a good idea to have these in a secure location in case of emergency. I’ve always advocated for getting a fireproof, waterproof safe. The one I recommend can be found by clicking here.
Let’s talk about it!
-
SOCIAL SECURITY CARD - There is no charge for a Social Security Card. This service is free! It will take between 1-4 weeks for your card to arrive. Simply go to ssa.gov to create your personal account.
-
BIRTH CERTIFICATE - Depending on where you were born, the fees and application process will vary. It’s best to start with the state’s Department of Health or simply do a Google search for [STATE] birth certificate copy.
(For Georgia, the website is https://dph.georgia.gov/ways-request-vital-record/online-ordering. You can expect it to arrive in 4-6 weeks and it’s $25.)
-
COPY OF DRIVER'S LICENSE OR ID CARD - This one is simple! Make a copy of your license or state issued ID card and put it in your safe! Voila!
-
PASSPORT - The U.S. Department of State recommends that you photocopy the information page of your passport and keep two extra passport photos with the copy of the passport. Having these photos helps you avoid having to retake them if you have to apply for a replacement passport. Put all of these in a Ziploc bag and place it in your safe.
So get it together and get those 4 items in your safe ASAP!
